Remember back in high school when you had a group project?It was always a feeling of playing some kind of bizarre, vicious lottery. Who would end up together – who’d get the smartest kid and who’d get the bully or the slacker in their group? 
 
Relief, indifference, grief, frustration, exhilaration.

That’s where we first experienced how broad the emotional range really is.
 
Who were you – the hard worker or the banter-maker? The “let’s just finish up already and go chill in the cafeteria”-slacker?
 
We all remember the different types of group members, and the problems and frustrations they brought upon us when we ended up in a bad group. And vice versa.
 
Now as adults, it’s no different from back then. Okay, that’s not quite true – there are a few differences, such as the actual work, the attitudes (though there’re still certain similarities to be honest) and the luxury (getting paid and having free coffee to name a few).
 
 Meeting Duckonalities
 
 
With that being said, the similarities between group projects in high school and meetings at work are not to be mistaken of. The composition is crucial when you’re gathering people at a meeting. If the people don’t work well together, nothing great will come out of the meeting.
 
That’s when it’s nice to know a little more about the different kinds of personalities you might encounter in a meeting. When you’re aware and informed, you can use your knowledge to create a better dynamic, atmosphere and drive. Try to incorporate it into your meeting preparation.

The Meeting Rocket

 

The Meeting Rocket

 

Description: With a full-blooded Meeting Rocket present, you’ll never experience stagnation at a meeting.
They downsize details and abstract ideas, and focus instead on making decisions, agreeing on tasks and setting goals.

The Meeting Rocket is always focused on moving on, and what the next step will or should be. Prioritizing tasks is their favorite game, just after decision making – their absolute favorite.

Any Meeting Rocket will come across as a natural leader with a strong personality.

 

Perfect meeting type: The Meeting Rocket is a must-have for decision making meetings.

 

Top quality: A lot of people look up to the Meeting Rocket, because they’ve got a mind firmly set on action – they get things done.

 

Making Decisions

 

Negative sides: The Meeting Rocket runs the risk of appearing dominant and controlling.

 

How to handle the Meeting Rocket: When you know you have a fast-moving rocket at your meeting, use this knowledge to prevent their impatience or look to them for help with moving on with a matter.

For example, if the meeting is a time-consuming innovation meeting, try to let the Meeting Rocket understand this from the beginning. You can do this by stating “It takes time to find new ideas that work” in the top of the agenda.

Or if you’re stuck in the same spiral of discussion, look to the Meeting Rocket (if they haven’t already intervened, that is) for help. Ask them directly – they might have a good idea for a quick way to move on.

If you are leading a meeting and experience a Meeting Rocket trying to take control of the meeting, don’t be afraid to put them in their place. Let them know that this is not their meeting to lead. If they have suggestions as to how you can lead the meeting better, tell them you’ll be all ears after this meeting. That way, you take control in a friendly and open-minded way.

 

The Meeting Motivator

 

The Meeting Motivator

 

Description: They take great pride in motivating everybody and can ease up the tense atmosphere after a heated debate. They love inspiration, and they seek to share good inspiration with everyone they meet on their way.

The Meeting Motivator will be focused on listening to everybody and let each meeting attendee share their opinion – yay! More inspiration.

 

Perfect meeting type: discussion and debate meetings, where they will make sure everybody feels inspired and motivated to participate.

 

Top quality: Inspiration and motivation are their greatest abilities, and the biggest plus is that they’re usually great at sharing these two gifts with their coworkers.

 Team Motivation

 

Negative sides: Since the Meeting Motivator is so focused on helping others, they take it pretty hard, if they’re ignored or feel like they aren’t being appreciated.

 

How to handle the Meeting Motivator: Motivation is always a valued asset. A tip when having a Meeting Motivator present is to always let them have a say – most likely they’ll contribute with inspirational words. They have a 6th sense of how to motivate others, so they’ll say what everybody needs to hear, if a meeting is stuck.

However, sometimes they get too into it. With motivators, there’s a chance that they’ll go on and on for way too long. So, as the meeting facilitator, don’t ever be afraid to stop them, even if you have to interrupt. What they’re saying is probably very motivating for the first couple of minutes, but remember, this is a meeting, we’ve got to finish up before lunch and half the people are out of coffee already.

 

The Meeting Caretaker

 

The Meeting Caretaker

 

Description: The Meeting Caretaker has a favorite word: Fair. It needs to be fair – meaning, we need to hear everybody’s opinion and the best way to settle on something is by counting votes. Every assignment will be solved best through cooperation, which is a key value for the Meeting Caretaker. In order to reach these ideals, it’s vital that everybody has a chance of being heard and share their opinion on the matter.

Due to the Meeting Caretaker’s focus on fairness, they come across as friendly, sympathetic and likeable. They always have an eye on everybody, and they'll make sure to pour coffee in your mug the second you drink up.

 

Perfect meeting type: The Meeting Caretaker is great to have at meetings with tough decisions or meetings about sensitive or passionate topics.

 

Top quality: Most people will look up to them for their calm and steadiness and their ability to speak on everyone’s behalf in meeting.

 

Coffee for Everyone

 

Negative sides: Insisting on cooperation can sometimes drag decisions and tasks on for longer than necessary.

 

How to handle the Meeting Caretaker: Since the Meeting Caretaker is so liked by basically everyone, it’s a good idea to let them speak at a large meeting. For example, if the manager is presenting something controversial, the Meeting Caretaker’s words will feel like everyone’s. If you let them speak their mind – concerns, thoughts, expectations and beliefs – many others will feel like they’ve been heard as well. It keeps order and calmness in the meeting.

They’re so focused on fairness, that no matter the outcome the meeting, attendees will feel like the decision was made based on a good and fair discussion – potentially by voting.

 

The Meeting Detective

 

The Meeting Detective

 

Description: The Meeting Detective is, as the name implies, the Sherlock Holmes of meetings. They see every little detail and gives it the attention it calls for. Their approach to everything is analytic and every little detail of any discussion will be examined thoroughly.

Other meeting attendees think of the Meeting Detective as the one who will see what everybody else misses. Most people will value this ability, though a few will be slightly annoyed because it’ll take longer (read: The Meeting Rocket).

 

Perfect meeting type: Information meetings, because the detective will see what information is missing, but also the decision making meeting to make sure the decision is thought through.

 

Top quality: A Meeting Detective will not settle before every stone has been turned and every single appendix scrolled through (preferably a couple of times).

 Analyzing Statistics

 

Negative sides: Because the Meeting Detective has a reputation of finding the weak spots in a deal, decision or conclusion, most people will listen to the Meeting Detective whenever they speak. This puts a lot of pressure on the Meeting Detective. What they fear most is to be wrong, so be very careful not to let them feel like ‘their word is law’ or that it’ll be their fault if something goes wrong.

 

How to handle the Meeting Detective: Always bring a detective if you’re in doubt – either of a decision or process. The Meeting Detective will probably make you and the other attendees feel like whatever decision you end up with is thought through. So, a detective can add real and important value to a meeting with tough decisions.

 

Looking Into the Details

 

Difficulties might occur when a Meeting Detective and a Meeting Rocket are in the same room. They’re so fundamentally different in minds that it’s almost inevitable that they’ll clash. One part wants to decide, the other wants to examine. It’s up to the meeting facilitator to make the choice without putting someone aside – both probably have a good point.
